Bread for the Journey

Doing Our First Works Over

Last Sunday in the sermonic moment, I shared a quote from James Baldwin about doing our first works over. He writes in Price of a Ticket: “In the church I come from… we were counseled, from time to time, to do our first works over.” Baldwin says, “to do your first works over means to reexamine everything. Go back to where you started, or as far back as you can, examine all of it, travel your road again and tell the truth about it. Sing or shout or testify or keep it to yourself but know whence you came.”

The dawning of the New Year offers a unique opportunity to reflect upon our histories, the stories of our lives, and grasp that which has helped to shape us and make us who we are today. Before making another list of New Year’s resolutions, pause and listen to your life. As the old Quaker saying suggests — “Let your life speak.”

Purpose of United Methodist Women

Contributed by Alice Belton

The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

The United Methodist Women began their journey in 1869 with six (6) members as the Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society. In 1973, United Methodist Women became the women’s mission organization of The United Methodist Church. In the Discipline it states that in every local United Methodist Church there shall be an organized unit of United Methodist Women. All women of the church are not automatically a member of United Methodist Women
