Loving
Ourselves
"The commandments... are summed up in this word, "Love
your neighbor as yourself."
A couple meeting for pre-marital
counseling was surprised by their pastor’s question – “Do you love yourself?” They were expecting
to answer the questions, “Do you love your partner?” or “What do you love about one another?”
The pastor went on to explain that before you can love anyone else, you must first love yourself as a child of God. I wonder
if this is what we haven’t learned deep down, to really love ourselves.
The
truth is, loving ourselves is more difficult to do than loving others. We have a lifetime of experiences; we
are bombarded with messages both positive and negative; our encounters with people, they all play some role in shaping how
we understand ourselves. Some of these experiences leave such an imprint on our psyches that it is difficult for us to believe
that we are truly lovable. And in response to our sense of inadequacy, we can sometimes try to mask it, developing patterns
harmful to ourselves and/or to others.... read more >>
