Born in Oakland, California (although he states he’s from Mississippi), Pastor Anthony grew up in Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church! Throughout those years he participated in worship service and Sunday school. After graduating from El Cerrito High School, he was later called into ministry by the Holy Spirit. Subsequently, in 2002, he graduated from Trinity College & Seminary in Indiana with a Bachelor’s in Theology. Later, he returned to Oakland, and began his leadership under the tutelage of Reverend Ron Swisher, at Taylor Memorial UMC.
In July of 2006, Bishop Warner Brown of the California/Nevada conference, appointed him Pastor of Calvary UMC in San Francisco, where he remained for 4 years. During this time, Pastor Anthony continued his education and graduated from the Pacific School of Religion of Graduate Theological Union (GTU) in Berkeley California, with a Master’s in Divinity in 2009. Bishop Brown then appointed him to The First United Methodist Church of Tracy, where he became Circuit Leader over 11 Churches in the Central Valley of California. In 2013, he was appointed to Temple United Methodist Church in San Francisco. During this appointment, he was appointed, Circuit Leader over the San Francisco United Methodist Churches. Also, in this season of his ministry, God and our Bishop, returned him to his roots, at Taylor Memorial UMC in Oakland, CA, where he currently serves as the Senior Pastor.
In 2015, he was elected Chairperson of the Western Jurisdiction of Black Methodists for Church Renewal (BMCR)! Additionally to that appointment, two years later he was elected Co-Chair of the Inner Ethnic Coordinators Committee of the Western Jurisdiction. Furthermore, he is also, the Circuit Leader for the UMCs in the cities of Oakland and Berkeley!
Pastor Anthony's greatest passion is studying the Holy Word, and constantly turns to Scripture for his source of theological inspiration and self-preservation. He is highly
recognized for his dedication to helping others experience andunderstand the power of God’s love and grace. He continues to be an extremely active member of our community and city. He also counsels residents of Federal halfway houses, and is a certified Chaplain at the Contra Costa County Jail in Richmond.
Pastor Anthony loves spending his personal time with family. Married to his best friend, who is an Oakland native, Valerie Lipscomb-Jenkins! Together, they have a blended family full of love, support, and many-many grandchildren! He also spends his free time fishing and restoring vintage cars.
Pastor Anthony continues to bless the Taylor Memorial UMC congregation and the congregations of our great nation, with his anointed gift of preaching, unconditional love for ALL, and an undiluted devotion to God’s work!!!!!
He also appreciates good poetry, such as this from one of his favorite Poets-
“God is all we hope for in love.
A glimpse of God we see when we are at our best.
When do you see God? All the time or sometimes?
When does praise fall from your lips? Before or after supper time?
Don’t wait for Sunday to show your soul.
At all times tell the world of the greatest peace that’s made you whole.”
